When I first saw the Book “Back In The Days” My heart and mind started racing , I flipped through it and knew I would be in for some surprises, I was taken way back when I saw a Young Lady (whom I thought was the most beautiful in the world when I was 10 years old) Standing in front of my Fathers Store . I then realized that I had a personal connection with the Photographer and begin looking searching for him. Then time passed and I was in the book store and came across “A Time Before Crack” and this time my palms were sweaty , I opened the book searching and flipping pages looking for that connection , I gave up and put the book back then something made me picked it up and turn pages to what may have be the last photo, And BOOM! It was there, My Brother Aubrey”BEETS”Kenan(R.I.P) sitting on a Mini Bike (full page B&W)in front of our Fathers Store on Church and Kings Highway, I cried right in the Store . Eventually I was able to get in touch with Jamel and Told him how touched I was by the photos and the Tragic Ending of Both My Father and My Brothers’ Lives in the Streets. Jamels’ photos bring back memories just like when you listen to Marvin Gaye songs . I am so thankful for brothers like him preserving our history and culture and just having an altogether positive spirit , I wish him nothing but the Best.

I would like to comment on the nappy headed hoes argument. First I would like to say thier is no corelation to calling young black women of class a derrogatory name like that. What those specific young black women represent good academic college student athletes. I am from the city and I am also a african american college student athlete. Now the difference in being in the hood, not taking care of my personal appearence and sleeping with everyone in the neighboorhood as opposed to being an intellegent student athlete is pretty ovious. Now to touch the no snitching situation. If you indulge yourself in a life style you are obligated to live by a code. Like if you were a marine or in the army you would live by death before dishoner. So the stop snitching goes to those who live by the code. If you are bad enough to cospire to a criminal act knowing the possibility of the repercussions than you should take responsibility of your action if you get caught without giving everyone up as a way to get out of trouble. Like when you sign a contract you are bound by the terms of that contract. If the terms are you could get shot or stabed or lose a love on for snitching than you already know what to expect. If you cant handle that don’t get involved.

When I saw the book “A Time Before Crack” I was blown away!!! The photos made me want to know the story behind almost every person in the Photo!! I have a few favaorites but one that was close to home for me was the Photo with the guy and the dog in motion…..YO that was my abuelas hood so I grew up over there RIVINGTON and PITT even though that was RIVINGTON and like ORCHARD st(im almost positive)!! Photographers like Jamel Shabazz inspire me!!! He captures the ESSENCE of the time and THE PEOPLE!!!!

Jamel is an american icon if you ask me. His photos capture the TRUE feel of what it was like growing up in the 80’s if you were a teenager or young adult. Nevermind the Hip-Hop, people dressed like that because they created a style. Those days were fresh and revolutionary and the creative spark was alive. This is what is missing today, however, with Jamel works around it forces us to bring back the spontanaeity and creative usefulness that defined alternative mainstream culture.
Already, we see an 80’s baby stlye of dress popular around the world with a modern twist. Long live Jamel
